Vehicle Summary

2018 Chrysler Town Exterior

Chrysler invented the modern minivan segment with the 1984 Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager. The Chrysler Town & Country arrived in 1989 as a premium minivan built on the long-wheelbase version of the chassis. The current fifth-generation Chrysler Town & Country arrived for the 2008 model year.

Power for the Chrysler Town & Country comes from a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The engine is rated 283 hp at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. The minivan is EPA-rated 17/25/20 mpg city/highway with gasoline, while FFV versions are rated 12/18/14 mpg with E85 fuel.

Six trim levels are available including LX, Touring, S, Touring-L, Limited, and Limited Platinum. Inside, the Town & Country seats seven people in three rows and features 31.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 78.9 cubic feet behind the second row, and 140.3 cubic feet behind the first row. The Town & Country features the Stow ‘n Go seating and storage system to store the second row seats, and the 60/40 split third-row seats fold flat into the floor.

In 2017, Chrysler will replace the long-running Town & Country minivan with the all-new Chrysler Pacifica minivan.

The Chrysler Town & Country minivan has a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and has earned a Good rating from the IIHS in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints & seats tests, but only a Poor rating in the small overlap test and an Acceptable rating for its child seat anchors (LATCH) ease of use.

Standard safety features include front, side, and full-length side curtain airbags and inflatable driver’s knee blocker, ParkView rearview camera, trailer sway damping, and electronic stability control with Brake Assist and all-speed traction control. The SafetyTec Group (Touring-L, Limited, and Limited Platinum) adds rain-sensitive windshield wipers, auto-high beam headlights, ParkSense rear park assist system, blind-spot monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection.

What We Think

In our 2014 Chrysler Town & Country S First Test, we noted that though the powertrain produced similar performance numbers to “many of its competitors, the 3.6-liter Pentastar and six-speed auto combination seem crude by comparison. The engine feels aggressive, but there is a noticeable (air intake?) whistle or (transmission?) whine as you pull away from a stop … Despite these criticisms, the Town & Country can peel out from a stop in the dry or wet—wheel hop and torque steer included. Around town, the handling feels confident, though the stiff suspension gives it a firm and bumpy ride, especially over rough pavement. Despite its light steering, the Town & Country S offers good initial turn-in response and tracks straight down the road. There is a notable amount of road and wind noise even at low speeds.”

We also found frustration with the Uconnect 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system for its difficulty in pairing and charging phones/music players.

The 2014 Chrysler Town & Country placed last in a five-way Minivan Big Test behind the Nissan Quest, Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and Kia Sedona. We concluded, “The long-in-the-tooth Chrysler is tops in sales but last in our Big Test. Still, the T&C is a great value and shows promise for the future.”
